How we prepare and verify this content

Choose the radio from the deployment model, not popularity. Payload, latency, coverage ownership, power source, installation access, fleet size and recurring costs usually eliminate several options before RF performance is compared.

Match each radio to its natural role.

BLE is strong for nearby commissioning, accessories and low-power peripherals. Wi-Fi fits local high-throughput products where infrastructure and power are available. LoRa supports small, infrequent packets over long private links. LTE-M and NB-IoT provide operator coverage without a local gateway but introduce subscriptions and network dependency.

Model the complete energy event.

Do not compare sleep current alone. Measure startup, association, network search, retries, payload transfer and shutdown under poor coverage. Cellular can remain active for much longer than expected; Wi-Fi reconnects can dominate short duty cycles; LoRa airtime and regional duty-cycle rules constrain throughput.

Hybrid designs need strict rules.

Multiple radios are valuable when each has a defined job and activation policy. Otherwise they multiply antennas, coexistence tests, certification scope, software states and support cases. Document which radio owns provisioning, normal telemetry, recovery and local service.

When to involve an engineering partner.

An independent review is most valuable before the PCB, enclosure, firmware architecture or pilot batch is frozen. OBJEX LABS can review hardware, firmware, testability, compliance and the manufacturing path, then define a scoped phase with clear deliverables and acceptance criteria.
