Custom hardware or an off-the-shelf device?
How we prepare and verify this contentBuy an existing device when it meets the electrical, mechanical, integration and lifecycle requirements without strategic compromise. Build custom hardware when differentiation, ownership, form factor, security or volume economics justify the development risk.
Do not compare purchase price alone.
Include gateways, subscriptions, installation time, integration adapters, data export, replacement policy and the cost of a vendor changing its API. An inexpensive device can become costly when deployed across many sites or maintained for years.
Custom must create measurable value.
Good reasons include a unique sensor arrangement, lower installation time, protected know-how, controlled data, a specialised enclosure or elimination of several devices. Cosmetic branding alone rarely pays back engineering, certification and inventory risk.
A hybrid path is often strongest.
Use certified compute or radio modules while customising power, sensing, mechanics and firmware. This preserves product ownership where it matters while reducing RF and supply uncertainty. Define exit options so a module can be replaced in a future revision.
When to involve an engineering partner.
