How much does a custom IoT device cost to develop?

There is no responsible fixed price without a defined scope. Cost is driven by technical uncertainty, radio and compliance requirements, mechanical work, firmware complexity, production tooling and the evidence required before release.

Separate engineering from unit cost.

Non-recurring engineering covers requirements, architecture, schematic, PCB, firmware, prototypes, validation and manufacturing setup. Unit cost covers components, PCB fabrication, assembly, test, enclosure, packaging and logistics. A low target unit cost can require more engineering work to remove expensive parts or operations.

The largest variables.

A mains-powered or radio product usually demands more compliance work than a low-voltage wired device. Custom RF, batteries, safety-critical outputs, mobile apps, cloud services and complex enclosures increase both effort and coordination. Existing, verified modules can reduce risk but may raise the BOM.

Ask for a staged estimate.

A credible proposal separates discovery, proof of concept, engineering prototype, design validation, pre-compliance and pilot production. Each gate should have outputs and acceptance criteria. This makes uncertainty visible and allows the company to stop, revise or invest further with evidence.

When to involve an engineering partner.

An independent review is most valuable before the PCB, enclosure, firmware architecture or pilot batch is frozen. OBJEX LABS can review hardware, firmware, testability, compliance and the manufacturing path, then define a scoped phase with clear deliverables and acceptance criteria.
