How to prepare an IoT device for CE and RED.

Compliance should shape the architecture before the final PCB. Identify applicable legislation and standards, control RF and EMC risks, prepare technical documentation and run targeted pre-compliance tests before booking the final laboratory campaign.

Start with intended use and markets.

Supply, radio technologies, frequencies, environment, users and installation method determine the applicable requirements. A battery sensor, a DIN-rail controller and a mains-powered consumer device do not follow the same risk path. Record these boundaries in the product requirements.

Design for the tests.

Use controlled return paths, filtering, shielding provisions and documented radio settings. Keep debug modes that can generate continuous carriers or worst-case traffic. Pre-scan emissions and immunity on a representative enclosure with production-intent cables, supplies and firmware.

Build the technical file continuously.

Requirements, risk assessment, schematics, BOM, PCB data, software versions, test reports, labels, instructions and declarations should evolve together. A laboratory report is only one part of conformity; configuration control must prove which product was actually assessed.

When to involve an engineering partner.
