Wireless module or custom RF design?
How we prepare and verify this contentUse a module when time, RF risk and certification effort matter more than the lowest possible unit cost. Consider chip-down RF only when volume, size, antenna constraints or supply strategy justify the additional engineering and compliance work.
What a module buys.
A module packages the radio, reference layout, crystal, matching network and often an antenna into a characterised assembly. It narrows layout freedom but reduces the number of RF variables that must be debugged. Documentation, regulatory grants and stable integration guidance can shorten the path to a working pilot.
When chip-down becomes rational.
Direct RF integration can reduce area or BOM and enable a specialised antenna. The benefit appears only after including antenna tuning, chamber time, layout iterations, regional variants, certification and production RF testing. At modest volumes, those non-recurring costs often outweigh the component saving.
Decide with lifecycle numbers.
Compare total engineering cost, expected volume, module premium, redesign risk and second-source options over the product lifetime. Also check whether the module certification actually covers the intended antenna, power level, enclosure and markets; a certified module does not make the final product automatically compliant.
When to involve an engineering partner.
