LoRa or Wi-Fi for remote sensors?

Wi-Fi fits where a reliable network exists and higher payload or direct IP access matters. LoRa fits small messages, longer links and nodes that wait for long periods. The installation, not a headline range figure, determines the choice.

Distance and obstacles must be measured on site.

Walls, reinforced concrete, metal, vegetation, antenna height and RF noise change the link budget. A detached structure may suit LoRa; a room with engineered Wi-Fi coverage and available power may favor Wi-Fi.

Do not use free-space range as a building prediction. Survey the site, define margin and repeat under worst conditions.

Energy depends on traffic profile.

LoRa can reduce the cost of a rare transmission, but long airtime or high power has a price. Wi-Fi can move more data quickly, while association and network availability matter. Calculate energy per message and the complete duty cycle.

When both are useful.

A multi-radio device can use LoRa for remote telemetry and Wi-Fi for configuration, local diagnostics or larger updates. The benefit comes with more antenna, firmware, test and power-management work.

Multiple radios are options, not shortcuts. ELPM-S3LW combines SX1262 sub-GHz, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This expands possible architectures but does not remove final-product RF design and certification work.
